A dry day in the Highlands

Running in the Highlands is always a compromise: you may get wet, you may get great views, and quite often you get both.

  • ✦ John Muir Way
  • ✦ West Highland Way
  • ✦ Dry weather, for once

Running in the Highlands is always a compromise. You may get wet, you may get great views, and quite often you get both.

This time, luckily, it was the views without the rain. The route took in sections of the John Muir Way and the West Highland Way: two paths with very different personalities, but the same feeling of being properly outside. The weather stayed dry long enough to enjoy the landscape, the changing ground, and the small satisfaction of moving through it under your own power.

There is something particularly good about a Highland run when the forecast has not quite made up its mind. You prepare for everything, accept that the conditions will decide the day, and then feel disproportionately grateful when the waterproofs stay in the bag.

The route is available below on Komoot, with the usual reminder that the map is the record of this run, not a promise that the weather will behave next time.
